Review:

Biolab Wars is an Action-Platformer with the look and feel of a classic NES game, that has you playing as one of three mercenaries responding to the emergence of a giant flying spaceship in the midst of a city.

In terms of presentation, this game does a great job hitting that “nostalgia” feel, with a pixel art look that feels ripped right out of a NES or SNES game. This is paired with a chiptune soundtrack that fits this presentation, although it isn’t especially memorable.

As for the gameplay, what’s here is fine, though the controls feel a bit stiff, the action a bit repetitive, and the game’s enemies and particularly bosses feel uninspired. More than anything, I felt that this game’s biggest flaw was how completely unoriginal and uninspired it felt – while the presentation is superb, there’s very little I could tell you about the gameplay itself from memory. You shoot a lot, usually picking off enemies from a safe spot across the screen.

Oh, there is one other complaint I have – while the game offers three playable characters, I could not distinguish anything that differentiated them from one another, other than how they look. Man, it would have been nice to have some sort of gameplay variety here.

Ultimately, Biolab Wars isn’t a terrible Action-Platformer, it’s just an extremely forgettable one. The presentation here is fantastic, but the gameplay is repetitive and uninspired. If you’re looking for a great retro-style Action-Platformer on the Switch, you have countless better options. However, given that the asking price here is $2, it may still be worth your while.

tl;dr – Biolab Wars is an Action-Platformer with a great retro-style NES/SNES pixel art aesthetic, and not much else. It’s not terrible, but the gameplay is repetitive, uninspired, and stiff. it’s not bad, but it’s extremely forgettable.
