Review:
Blazing Beaks is a Two-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements that has players controlling one of an assortment of anthropomorphic birds bearing guns and shooting either each other or other woodland animals.
The game is presented in a colorful, friendly pixel art presentation that works well enough for the game, although it doesn’t really do much to set this game apart from others.
As for the gameplay, there’s a level of difficulty here that seems at odds with that colorful presentation. Each of the playable bird characters in the game has their own strengths and weaknesses, and depending on which one players choose, they’ll be dealing with a short range, limited health, or frustrating reload time… but even the birds with the most health don’t have a lot, and the game piles more difficulty on top of this with its artifact system, which tempts players with artifacts that will sell for money players can use to upgrade their arsenal… but punishes them by forcing debuffs on them until they can unload these goods.
It’s an interesting risk/reward system in theory, but in practice I found that the game was already difficult enough without making it harder. And while, yes, this is a Roguelike-style game after all, I wish this game didn’t make it feel like I was always struggling.
It’s a pity Blazing Beaks is so damn tough, because the core gameplay here is good, with some good two-stick shooter gameplay and a decent variety of weapons. However, I simply couldn’t enjoy this game. Fans of the genre looking for a challenge may want to give it a try, but otherwise there are other games in the genre that may be more deserving of your attention.
tl;dr – Blazing Beaks is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements with a cartoony pixel art presentation featuring anthropomorphic birds with guns. Unfortunately, the game’s high difficulty doesn’t really fall in line with the cartoony presentation, and the nice unique features the game has only add to that difficulty. Action fans looking for a challenge might enjoy this, but I did not.
