Review:
Blazing Chrome is an Action-Platformer that is very clearly mimicking the Contra series, with similar visuals, gameplay style, and challenge level to Contra III, the SNES entry in that series.
As far as the presentation goes, this means H.R. Giger-esque robots and lots of explosions, all rendered in a 16-bit pixel art style, with poorly-sampled digitized voice clips that truly capture the era this game is aiming for. It’s not impressive on a technical level, but when it comes to capturing a specific mood, this game does so perfectly.
The gameplay is also spot-on, with action-packed gameplay and massive, inventive boss enemies. Yet Blazing Chrome doesn’t rest on its laurels – while this game copies the same sort of run-and-gun bullet hell Action-Platformer action of the Contra games, it adds in an ability to hold onto and swap between four weapons, a dodge roll move, and even mech suit upgrades you can find in levels. However, at its core, this game plays like a long-lost Contra game.
For some, that won’t necessarily be a good thing, as this game also features a difficulty level similar to the Contra games, which means that it is damn difficult. Some might enjoy this, but not everyone is going to want to struggle through this sort of difficulty level.
Fans of the Contra series disappointed by Contra Rogue Corps this year should definitely consider Blazing Chrome to be the Contra game they were hoping for in the first place. It copies the presentation and the action of that series perfectly, and even brings a few ideas of its own to the table. While its high difficulty level won’t appeal to everyone, players looking for an action-packed title with a good challenge should definitely give this game a try.
tl;dr – Blazing Chrome is an Action-Platformer that plays like a long-lost 16-bit entry in the Contra series, with the same level of intense action, and its delightfully retro presentation. Its high challenge level, fitting for the Contra series, means it won’t be for everyone. However, if you like challenging action, this game should definitely be one you give a try.
