Players: 1-2 Co-Op (Local)

Review:
BoxBoy + BoxGirl is a Puzzle Platformer that’s pretty easy to understand, just watching a brief video of it playing. You play a box-shaped character who can grow and split off boxes from himself, and players use this ability to get past obstacles. Easy-peasy.
This simplicity is clearly part of the game’s appeal. Your character does have a few different abilities – you can control the way boxes spread out from you, and you can set them down or fire them away from you like a bullet, or even move through them to get from one place to another. Later, you can even make use of different characters with other shapes and sizes of boxes. However, this is all presented in a straightforward fashion, and nothing here ever feels especially difficult to understand.
This simplicity is also reflected in the game’s art style, which is… well, pretty basic. Your character is just a white box with a black outline, eyes, and legs, and the world is nearly that simple as well. It’s nothing all that interesting, but I suppose it fits this game’s simple themes.
Of course, this simplicity works against the game as well, as it doesn’t really do anything especially compelling or outstanding. Like I said, once you’ve seen a video of the game in action, you can pretty much tell what to expect from it, for better or worse.
it also bears mention that the game includes a massive number of levels nearing the 300 mark, including a series of Co-Op levels. While each level is itself bite-size, that’s still an impressive number, and players will have a good chunk of gameplay to get through.
In the end, for those looking for a decent, straightforward Platform-Puzzle game, BoxBoy + BoxGirl! does a good job of giving a solid, if a bit predictable, experience with the genre. Those looking for a decent game in the genre would do well to give it a try.
tl;dr – BoxBoy + BoxGirl is a Puzzle-Platformer with the simple and straightforward premise that you play as a box-shaped character that can spawn off additional boxes to solve puzzles. The game’s premise and presentation don’t do anything particularly new and exciting, but this is still a solid game for fans of the genre.
