Review:
Brotherhood United is an Action-Platformer released on Xbox One and PC in 2018 and ported to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2020. This game puts you in the role of a gang member fighting hordes of enemies in a rival gang.
Brotherhood United has a 2D pixel art presentation that’s mostly pretty forgettable and repetitive. While the gory title splash screen is at least interesting, much of the game itself has bland, repetitive characters and bland, repetitive environments. This is backed by a forgettable rock-inspired soundtrack.
In keeping with the repetitive visuals, the gameplay is also pretty repetitive. The game plays much in the style of genre classics like Contra and Metal Slug, but doesn’t have the level of inventiveness or variety that either of those franchises is known for. There are at least a few nice mechanics here like a timed-reload mechanic and the need to use grenades on armored enemies, but overall these small bits of originality just don’t overcome the repetitive banality that plagues the game overall.
There’s nothing outright wrong with Brotherhood United – it works well enough mechanically and isn’t an outright ugly game. However, with so many great entries in this genre on the Nintendo Switch, there’s no reason to bother with a game as bland and unoriginal as this one.
tl;dr – Brotherhood United is an Action-Platformer in the same style as classics like Contra and Metal Slug. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as creative as those games, and is instead repetitive and forgettable. You have much better options on the Nintendo Switch.
