Review:

Cake Laboratory is an Arcade-style game that’s comparable to those arcade stacking games – you have a series of cakes to drop one on top of the other, and are trying to do so without the pile toppling.

The presentation here is pretty decent, if a bit simple. The cakes all look appealing, and there’s a good amount of variety to their design. In fact, the game even lets you mix and match cakes to icing and topping to create your own custom cakes, which is a nice touch.

As for the game itself, this is not just simple, it’s (pardon the pun) a cakewalk. Until later on in the game, you have to actually try to lose to fail at this game. Dropping the cakes in an uneven fashion makes the stack wobble, but not very much, and you only lose when you drop the latest cake too far off to the side of the last cake on the pile, meaning your stack can be ridiculously uneven and you can still succeed just fine.

I breezed through this game’s 50 levels getting a perfect three-star rating on all of them in under a half hour, with very little effort put into actually, you know, trying. What’s worse, the game could have possibly remedied the lack of challenge by putting in an endless mode where your mistakes compounded over time, giving you at least the challenge of beating your own record… but no. When you finish the game’s 50 levels, that’s it.

It’s a shame that Cake Laboratory is so absurdly easy and offers no reason to keep playing after the game’s quick 50 levels. The presentation here is really nice, and this could have been a decent time-waster if there were at least an endless mode. Unfortunately, without much of a challenge, this game is really only the sort of thing young children will appreciate… and not for very long, at that.

tl;dr – Cake Laboratory is an Arcade-style game where you’re building a tower of cakes while trying to keep them from toppling over. The game looks pretty good, but it is sadly also absurdly easy and completed within a half hour, leaving little reason to come back to it again. It’s not worth bothering with.
