Review:
Candle: The Power of the Flame is a Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing as a small tribal creature on a quest to rescue the others of his tribe, using his ability to hold a flame in his hands to get through dangerous territory.
This game has you working your way through gorgeous, intricately detailed, hand-drawn levels and solving puzzles within the environment to make progress.
That at first seems like a good thing, however, it quickly becomes frustrating, as it’s often difficult to see through all of that detail to know what it is that you’re supposed to be interacting with to solve puzzles. In one situation, for example, I spent a good long while on a screen trying to move all round in hopes that I would find what I needed to mess with to deactivate a trap that would kill me and send me back a few screens. Eventually, purely by accident, I happened upon it – apparently it was a vine that looked for all the world like countless other vines hanging down from the lush environs above.
I will admit, I did not have the patience to push myself through many puzzles like these. It’s one thing to make me look for a needle in a haystack, and another to make me look for a needle in a pile of needles.
It’s a pity that the puzzles in Candle: The Power of the Flame are ruined by the game’s visual presentation, because on a purely aesthetic level, that presentation is absolutely gorgeous. It’s just not very conducive to a good game.
tl;dr – Candle: The Power of the Flame is a Puzzle-Platformer where you play as a tribal villager using, among other things, his ability to carry flame in his hands to solve puzzles and trek to save his village. This game has absolutely amazing hand-drawn visuals, but unfortunately those visuals also make it damn difficult to see what you need to do to get past the puzzles in a given area, making this a really frustrating experience.
