.cat is a Platformer released on Nintendo Switch in 2021. This game has players taking the role of a cat who follows a mysterious magical entity into another world.

Visually, .cat looks really appealing, with some nice, colorful pixel art visuals that have some good animation. However, the rest of the presentation here is another story. The transitions are instantaneous and jarring, and the chiptune soundtrack is almost immediately annoying. Despite the endearing visuals, players will find it hard to love this game.

Of course, then there’s the gameplay, which starts with a pretty mediocre platformer, adds in terrible, unfocused level design, tosses in some frustration at being tossed back to the last checkpoint for the most minor of mistakes, and just to make sure this game is as lacking in fun as possible, makes the simple act of jumping frustrating and unsatisfying in multiple ways – jumping on enemies to defeat them freezes you in midair for a moment before dropping you, and this is also one of those games where holding down the jump button makes you jump repeatedly.

You may be tempted to get .cat for its endearing cover art and lovely pixel art visuals, which seem to gesture towards a game that’s a fun throwback Platformer… but don’t be fooled. This game is a terrible Platformer with nothing going for it beyond those visual elements. In fact, if what you want is a pixel art throwback Platformer starring a cat, you can already find a much better one on the Nintendo Switch in the form of MagiCat. Because of this, .cat is just a waste of your time and money.

tl;dr – .cat is a Platformer with some endearing pixel art visuals and absolutely terrible platforming gameplay, with bad mechanics and shoddy level design. Do not buy it.
