Review:
(Note: The games in this Compilation are also included in Cat Quest: The Fur-tastic Trilogy along with Cat Quest III.)
Cat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack is, as the name suggests, a Compilation of Cat Quest and Cat Quest II, released on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Both of these family-friendly Action-RPGs take the typical quests and adventures of the genre and streamline them and makes them user-friendly and easy for anyone to play.
Here’s what I thought of each of the games in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat Quest | Action-RPG | 1 | B |
tl;drCat Quest is a family-friendly Action-RPG that simplifies numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined, user-friendly, and… well, full of cat puns. It may not have the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre, but it is nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable game, and one fans of the genre would do well to give a look. | |||
| Cat Quest II | Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drCat Quest II, like the first game, is a family-friendly Action-RPG that simplifies numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined, user-friendly, and… well, full of puns. And this game builds on its predecessor by adding an exceptional and well thought-out co-op mode. It still may not have the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre, but it is nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable game, and one fans of the genre would do well to give a look. | |||
Both of these games are pretty similar (thus the similar reviews), but the second game is definitely an improvement over the first one thanks to its solid two-character system and great co-op gameplay, as well as overall improvements to the presentation. However, both games are excellent, simple Action-RPGs that are a lot of fun to play.
On that note, both games also share the same flaws – the light nature of the games’ tone and the uncomplicated nature of its mechanics do mean that it feels like a less significant game than others in its genre. This is a pair of fun, lighthearted romps, not truly epic entries in the genre you’re likely to look back on fondly a decade from now. However, I think it’s fair to say that the games know what they are and have no illusions about being anything more than that.
One more thing I should note on here is the question of value in this compilation. If you don’t care whether you get your games in digital or physical form, this is not a good deal – the normal price for this compilation is a little more that $2 over the price these games sell for separately on the eShop. However, alternately, if you prefer your games in physical form, a $2 premium to get a physical cartridge with both games on it doesn’t seem all that bad. I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective.
However, whether you get these games together as one cartridge or separately in digital form, Cat Quest and Cat Quest II are both excellent Action-RPGs, and combining them into one package makes for a good compilation. If you’re a fan of the genre and prefer your games in physical form, this is a solid pair of games that’s well worth getting.
tl;dr – Cat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack is a Compilation of two family-friendly Action-RPGs that simpliy numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined and user-friendly, albeit lacking the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre. This physical compilation is slightly pricier than buying the games separately in digital form, but if you’re looking for a solid pair of Action-RPGs on a cartridge, this Compilation is worth looking into.
