Review:
CATch the Stars is a Puzzle Game released on PC in 2020 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2022. Players are presented with stars in a sky that each have a path to follow, and must select the order in which they will travel to ensure that all of them reach their destination without colliding into another star.
The presentation here is simple, but pleasant, featuring simply-animated 2D visuals representing the silhouettes of various locations beneath the night sky. This is backed by a simple, relaxing synthesized soundtrack and plucky chords for when you select a star to move.
The gameplay here is simple, but takes on some wonderful complexity as new elements that are added, such as pathways that are only safe to use every other turn, and stars that move simultaneously with other stars. While it all still boils down to a question of order of operation, the game keeps things interesting through all of the included 50 levels – not especially long, but plenty enough to justify the tiny $3 price tag.
Really my biggest complaint here is that actually selecting the star you want can be fiddly using the traditional gamepad controls. Thankfully, this game’s touchscreen controls work wonderfully, and I would say this is the ideal way to play the game.
In the end, CATch the Stars is not anything that’s going to revolutionize the genre, but it’s pleasant, and the puzzles are challenging enough to be engaging, with decent variety as you progress through the game’s short run time. If you’re looking for a relaxing, inexpensive Puzzle game to add to your collection, CATch the Stars is a good choice.
tl;dr – CATch the Stars is a Puzzle Game that has you guiding stars along paths while trying to avoid them colliding. It’s nothing truly remarkable, but the puzzle design is good and it has a nice, relaxing atmosphere that makes it well worth the small $3 price tag.
