Review:

Chime Sharp is the sequel to 2010’s excellent puzzle game Chime, and the gameplay here is much the same – You are placing various Tetris-style blocks on a field to create squares and rectangles. However, these matches won’t be cleared until a “timeline” in time with each level’s music crosses over the match.

If the formula sounds familiar, it’s because it’s very similar to the Lumines series. However, while that was a “falling block” game where the challenge was making rectangles of the pieces’ two colors, here you’re placing the blocks anywhere you want on a field, making for a different sort of play experience. The result is a pretty mellow, soothing puzzle game experience, made even more pleasing by the game’s electronica music and pleasing color palette.

Chime Sharp’s main distinction from the original is its new soundtrack, and on that note, I have to say… honestly, I prefer the original. What’s on offer here is good, but I’m really missing some of the tracks of the first game.

What’s more, the game is lacking a multiplayer mode, which it really seems like it would benefit from.

That said, Chime is still an excellent puzzle game well worth a look from fans of the genre, especially those who enjoy a slick audiovisual presentation.

tl;dr – Chime Sharp, like its predecessor, is an excellent, chill sorta’ puzzle game that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down, and has a wonderful presentation. It’s just a shame that there’s no multiplayer.

Grade: B+
