Review:
Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy! is the latest Dungeon Crawler RPG in the long-running series, bringing with it a new “buddy” system that has you bringing a second character in the dungeon to assist you.
As it happens, this is my first Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon game, and if this is any indication of what the series is like, it may well be my last. Sorry, I just could not get into this game, the combat seemed too simple and repetitive. I know some out there find it rewarding, but for me, this was just boring. I was staving off falling asleep while playing this game.
The presentation in this game has its moments, it’s cute, with adorable character designs… but it also has really low-quality graphics, at times looking like something out of the early PS2 era. It has good music… but that good music is largely just remixes of other Final Fantasy music, often presented out of context. Why is the wannabe superhero Moogle character’s theme song The Man With the Machine Gun, a song that’s directly tied to another character that has nothing to do with Moogles?
I’ll be the first to admit if I just don’t “get” it when it comes to this game, but I simply do not see the appeal. It seems like the most vapid of light snacks for fans of the epic meals Final Fantasy fans are used to in that series, and I don’t know why anyone would settle for a game that for all appearances seems mediocre in just about every way.
tl;dr – Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy! is a Dungeon-Crawler RPG that follows the tradition of this series, but doesn’t really offer anything significant for anyone but the most die-hard fans of the franchise. Unless you’re absolutely desperate for a new RPG, skip this one.
