Review:

Chop is Dish is a Platformer that… yes, that is the game’s actual name. No, there’s no reason for the game’s title to have such broken English. Yes, pretty much the entire game has the same degree of care and attention paid to it. Anyway, you play a cook that’s trying to get his stolen meat back by slaughtering every animal he finds.

In a way, this is kinda’ amusing, as enemies drop meat like Mario enemies drop coins. Kill a goblin? Get some meat! Hop on a gopher’s head? Enjoy some roadkill! Bop a fly out of commission? For some reason, it rewards you with meat!

It’d be endearing if everything about this game wasn’t so amateurishly done. The gameplay is straight out of a Mario game, except without the quality. Jump, bop enemies on the head, maybe get a power-up (the first you encounter is a shotgun, to give you an idea)… but it’s all marred by poor hit detection, and it just doesn’t feel very satisfying to move your little chef guy around.

Also, the gameplay here is just uninspired. At one point, you jump on a snail, and it leaves its shell, making the same “whoop” noise Mario makes when stomping on enemies. Any guesses what the shell does when you run into it? Well, it doesn’t quite do the same thing as a Koopa Troopa shell does, since the hit detection is so terrible that you end up running right past the thing before it registers, but you get the idea.

On top of this, the game’s visuals, which seem to be going for an old-school 8-bit/16-bit aesthetic, are made distracting and terrible by an odd flickering that’s omnipresent in the game, almost as if it keeps trying to display at the wrong resolution. And this is on top of other problems, like foreground that blends into the background, and backgrounds that look like foreground that you can walk on.

Suffice it to say, Chop is Dish is a game that is absolutely loaded with problems. Everything from the shoddy gameplay to its lousy presentation seems poorly done, and lacking any sort of unique inspiration. Even for the low price this game sells for, it’s not worth it – there are far too many good platformers on the Switch to waste your time with this one.

tl;dr – Chop is Dish is a Platformer that has you jumping on platforms and animals to gather up meat. It’s ugly, it’s uninspired, it’s poorly-made, and just about everything here seems like it was created by an amateur trying to copy better games without the skill to even come close to them. It’s not worth even its low asking price.
