Review:
Circuits is a puzzle game where players are trying to recreate sound clips from individual music segments using purely the audio as their guide.
You’re given a branching timeline of sorts, as well as multiple samples to slot into spots on that timeline, and just by listening to the target sound clip and comparing it to the individual components, you have to put those components in the right places to create that clip. It’s a really clever idea with some good potential, but a few issues keep it from achieving true greatness.
Firstly, this game feels like it could really stand to be streamlined somewhat – there seems like far too many commands you need to go through to compare a part of the target song to a music snippet. In addition, the gameplay is so simple and straightforward that at times it just feels like I’m following directions rather than, you know, playing.
What’s more, I can’t shake the feeling that a lot more could have been done with this concept, like longer levels that are actually full song length, or a freestyle mode to actually build your own songs. The missed potential here is really disheartening, because the foundation is so strong – there’s just not much built on that foundation.
However, what really hurts this game is its length – there are only a few dozen levels in the game, and it’s all over surprisingly quickly. The result is a game that feels like it was rushed out the door before it got the content it really needed to flourish.
It’s a shame too, because the actual music in this game, brief as it is, is pretty spot-on, with a variety of different styles and solid composition. And while the presentation is really basic, it’s clean and works well enough to support the gameplay.
All in all, Circuits seems like a proof of concept more than a full-fledged game. I would absolutely love to see the core mechanics of this title greatly expanded on in a fleshed-out version of what’s here, but as it is, there’s too little content in this game to really recommend it.
tl;dr – Circuits is a puzzle game where players must piece together a song clip part-by-part using only sound as their guide. It’s a great concept, but is sorely lacking the features and levels it needs to make this feel like a full game.
