Review:
Super Box Delivery, released in 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner in the same vein as games like the Temple Run series. For those unfamiliar with this sort of game, players are constantly moving forward on a path dodging obstacles left and right and collecting pickups, with the goal being less about trying to get to the end so much as simply surviving as long as possible. In this game, players are guiding a car down an endless road, picking up boxes and dropping them off at delivery stations, all while avoiding obstacles and oncoming traffic.
One thing I must commend this game on right off the bat is its excellent graphics – Super Box Delivery manages to do some impressive things with its measly 271MB, giving us some really nice, detailed, colorful cel-shaded 3D environments and vehicles with elements jumping and dancing in time with the game’s music while the world literally rolls toward you on a constant downward slope. It’s just a shame that music is so annoyingly repetitive that you’ll quickly want to shut it off, because otherwise the presentation here is excellent.
Unfortunately, the gameplay isn’t quite up to the same level as the visuals. The core premise is sound enough – you have the risk/reward of collecting boxes and trying to save up as many as possible before dropping them off at the occasional dropoff station, getting a bigger bonus for dropping off more at a time. In addition, over a longer period of time, you can buy multiple gameplay and cosmetic upgrades that you earn through your progress in the game.
Unfortunately, none of those upgrades improves your turning ability, which is horribly sluggish, and makes controlling your vehicle extremely frustrating. When you crash, much of the time you’ll swear it wasn’t due to your own fault but because your car wouldn’t do as you directed it to. This game supports optional motion controls too, but trust me when I say that these do not help at all (and in fact, seem to make things worse).
If Super Box Delivery had better turning controls, I could see this being a fun little time-waster with graphics that punch above its weight. Unfortunately, as-is, it makes for a frustrating experience that seems like it was so close to being a much better game. Skip this one, you have better options.
tl;dr – Super Box Delivery is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner where players drive a vehicle collecting and dropping off packages. The graphics in this game are surprisingly good, but the music is absolutely terrible, and the terrible turning controls ruin any fun this game could provide. You have better options than this on the Nintendo Switch.
