WARNING: THIS GAME HEAVILY PUSHES MICROTRANSACTIONS AND SEASON PASSES
My Hero Ultra Rumble is a multiplayer-focused “Battle Royale” style Action game released in 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Based on the My Hero Academia anime franchise, this game takes the characters from that franchise and gives them the Battle Royale treatment.
The presentation here is okay, but seems somewhat dated, with cel-shaded 3D visuals that work well enough to depict the franchise’s characters, but with simple environments that do little to spark the imagination. This is of course joined by voice acting for said characters, and an energetic soundtrack. It all works, but there’s nothing here that’s going to wow anyone.
For what it’s worth, the Battle Royale elements seem to be done well here, and there’s definitely a bit of glee that comes from finding untouched treasure, and the nervousness that comes with it that someone else may be nearby looking to take it from you. It doesn’t help that the game makes frequent use of helper items whose use isn’t exactly clear, but overall this element is done well.
The problem is when combat is initiated. Simply put, it’s a mess. If you can land the first hit, you might be able to enjoy unleashing on your opponent, but if you’re on the receiving end, you’ll likely find yourself stunned and unable to do much but take the damage piled on you. There just doesn’t seem any grace or nuance to the combat here, and as a result it often seems to devolve in a cluster of special moves with the attempt to land a good hit so you can just go to town on the opponent.
I suppose if you’re the sort of person who loves both Fortnite and My Hero Academia and dreamed of someday getting a game that would blend the two together, this may seem like a dream come true. But I think even fans of both genres will be frustrated by the messy combat this game offers. Maybe instead just stick with Fortnite and watching the anime.
tl;dr – My Hero Ultra Rumble is a game that combines the characters of the My Hero Academia setting with the online multiplayer mayhem of a Battle Royale-style Action game. It’s not a bad idea in theory, but in practice the action is a nasty mess, and as a result it’s a difficult game to recommend.
