Review:
Sword of Glory is a Roguelike Action game where players take the role of a champion reincarnated by Death (who claims to be your… daddy?), who is evidently trying to end a villain’s reign of terror by… getting into a lot of gladiatorial fights, I guess? Look, the story here is extremely poorly-written and poorly-edited in a way that makes it frequently nonsensical. Shakespeare, this ain’t.
It’s not just the story. Everything about this game seems ramshackle as if it’s all held together with duct tape and chewing gum, with some absurdly poor 3D visuals that lack personality, music tracks that I have no doubt are bought assets or public domain work, and voice clips that vary in volume, are poorly-acted, and that often cut into each other in jarring ways. To say this game seems unpolished is a massive understatement.
Sadly, the combat doesn’t fare much better here. It’s clear the game’s designers wanted there to be some depth, with multiple types of attacks. However, this hardly matters when the most effective strategy is frequently just button-mashing on the fast attack, dodging when you need to, and backing up and running in circles when you need to recharge your stamina. Now, this won’t work on all enemies – some enemies that use shields or other special attacks require a little more thought. However, this seems to be true for most enemies.
However, to the game’s credit, while it messes up virtually everywhere else, it seems to do a decent job with its Roguelike elements, with a decent variety of choices for upgrades and interesting things to unlock. However, this one decent gameplay element hardly makes up for… well, the entire rest of the game.
Perhaps with more skill or more work, Sword of Glory could have been a decent game, but everything about this game just screams “amateurish”. Perhaps this might have been a passable distraction if it were sold for $1-$2, but at $15, it’s an insult. And even if it goes on sale for $2, I still cannot imagine that most players will be satisfied with their purchase at that price. Skip this one.
tl;dr – Sword of Glory is a Roguelike Action game where players are essentially just participating in a series of gladiatorial fights. Unfortunately, virtually everything about this game is poorly-constructed, amateurish, and unpolished, and while the Roguelike elements aren’t bad, that doesn’t make up for the poor combat, the nonsensical story, the ugly visuals, the terrible sound design… in short, don’t get this game.
