Review:

Wargroove + Wargroove 2 Bundle, released on Nintendo Switch in 2023, is a Compilation of the two named Turn-Based Strategy games, both playing similarly to games in the Advance Wars series.

I have separately reviewed both of these games. Here is what I thought of both of the games in this collection:

tl;drWargroove is a Turn-Based Strategy game that is a damn near perfect spiritual successor to Advance Wars. This game is absolutely loaded with features, and should be considered a must-have for any fan of strategy games.
Wargroove 2Turn-Based Strategy1-4 Competitive (Local and Online), Online Content SharingA
tl;drWargroove 2 is a Turn-Based Strategy game which, like the previous Wargroove, clearly takes its inspiration from Nintendo’s Advance Wars series, albeit with a medieval fantasy setting and a wealth of features and improvements over what Nintendo has on offer. This sequel makes multiple small improvements, such as a new Roguelike-esque Conquest mode, but mostly this is more of the same sublime Turn-Based Strategy gameplay we saw in the first game. And in improving on one of the best games in the genre, Wargroove 2 has arguably become the new king of the genre on Nintendo Switch. Plus, with the game costing only $20, Strategy fans will absolutely want to get their hands on this game.

In short, I really, really like these games, and I think both games are pretty similar. That does mean that Wargroove 2 is “more of the same”, but when something is “the same” as a game that I named my choice for Game of the Year in 2019, it’s hard to see that as a complaint. Quite simply, these are a pair of amazing Turn-Based Strategy games, and fans of the genre should absolutely get their hands on these games.

Okay, that’s pretty straightforward, meaning the only remaining question is, is this bundle a good value? Well, that’s a bit iffy. First, I should say that this bundle doesn’t come with the Double Trouble expansion to the first game, but that’s a non-issue, as that’s a free expansion. And to this bundle’s credit, its $36 price tag does save you $4 off of the price of the individual games (each priced at $20)… which isn’t great, but it’s something. However, that’s far less enticing when you consider that the original Wargroove goes on sale for $8, and Wargroove 2 did at least have a launch discount of $4 all on its own, while this bundle of the two games has never, as of the time of this writing, gone on sale. It’s not a physical release, either, so you’re not even getting a cartridge out of the deal.

Perhaps it’s not fair to consider sale prices when judging the value of this bundle, and perhaps this bundle will receive a great sale after I post this review. I don’t know. But I do know that if I’m telling anyone to get the Wargroove games, and I do highly recommend both of them, that I’m going to be telling them to wait for a sale and get them both separately, as you’ll be saving more money than you will with this bundle.

tl;dr – Wargroove + Wargroove 2 Bundle is a Compilation of the two named Turn-Based Strategy games that play much like Nintendo’s Advance Wars series. The games are outstanding, but this bundle isn’t an especially good deal. In fact, you’re better off waiting until the individual games go on sale and buying them then.

Grade: B+
