Review:
Cubic Light is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players must place different colored light projectors onto a grid to cover the entire grid with the appropriate-colored lights. Released on PlayStation 4 in 2022 and ported to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 in 2023, this game’s take on the genre involves an abstract “spacey” presentation.
The presentation here uses 2D “vector”-style visuals that seem reminiscent of games like Geometry Wars, albeit without that franchise’s flair. This is joined by simple sound effects and extremely faint instrumental and choral music. Seriously, I can barely hear it, even after turning up the in-game volume from 50% to 100%. Not great.
As for the gameplay itself, Cubic Light works fine, but doesn’t do anything especially noteworthy or spectacular. Just looking at a few screenshots, you should get a pretty good understanding of exactly how this game plays. The only exception is every fifth level, where players must decide for themselves which color each of the projectors needs to be to recreate the pattern.
Look, if all you want is a simple Puzzle game for $3, this will do the trick, but the lack of polish in the presentation, the lack of anything interesting or memorable, all of this adds up to a mediocre entry in the genre. And while some may find it worth the small $3 price tag, this game definitely isn’t likely to be anyone’s favorite game in the genre.
tl;dr – Cubic Light is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players place light projectors on a grid to fill the entire grid in with the appropriate color of light, presented with a vector-style “spacey” theme. I suppose this game works, but it does nothing interesting or memorable, and the presentation lacks polish. Overall, this is an okay Puzzle game, but far from a great one.
