Review:

Onion Assault is a Platformer released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2023. This game puts players in the role of a shirtless, muscular onion farmer (or his mom) on a quest to fight an invading army by tossing vegetables at them.

The visuals in this game make use of colorful cel-shaded 3D visuals that are a tad abstract, but you get the general idea. There’s a nice little detail in that everything in this game’s world is dancing and moving in time with the beat of the soundtrack, and although the game’s synthesized soundtrack isn’t one I’d say is especially great, this detail nevertheless gives the game a ton of personality.

However, the real surprise here is the gameplay, which I would say combines the game mechanics of Super Mario Bros. 2 with level design seemingly inspired by Donkey Kong Country. Much as in Super Mario Bros. 2, you’ll be plucking vegetables out of the ground to toss at enemies, and you can hop on enemies’ heads to pick them up and toss them as well. However, like Donkey Kong Country, levels are created to be something like an obstacle course with new enemies and obstacles regularly popping up to make things more interesting.

I only have two problems with this game. First, while the level design mirrors Donkey Kong Country, this game doesn’t mimic that game’s hidden secrets – you only have three large hidden coins to find in every level, and that’s it. Secondly, the controls for this game are a little imprecise, particularly when your character is turning around and you have a bit of a delay.

However, overall I found Onion Assault to be a delightful Platformer that evokes some real classics of yesteryear while still forging its own identity. If you enjoy either the Donkey Kong Country games or especially if you enjoy Super Mario Bros. 2, this is definitely a game you’ll want to try.

tl;dr – Onion Assault is a Platformer where players play as a shirtless hunk (or his mom) fighting off an invading army by tossing vegetables at them. The gameplay here combines elements of Super Mario Bros. 2 with Donkey Kong Country, and the result is fantastic, and held back only by a somewhat loose controls and a lack of Donkey Kong Country’s depth. Still, as a solid mash-up of those two titles, this is an excellent Platformer well worth playing.
