Defentron is a Tower Defense game released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2020 where players place towers on a grid to fend off attackers and keep them from reaching your home base.

If you’re a fan of Tower Defense games, you’ll have noticed how painfully generic that last paragraph was, and that is because Defentron does indeed feel like a painfully generic Tower Defense game. There is very little that this game does that’s particularly exceptional or out of the norm for the genre, with the one feature I can point to being the ability to “overload” your towers, making them temporarily more powerful but then having them self-destruct afterwards. And… I suppose that’s something, but it’s not much.

Part of my issue here is that levels are so short that you rarely feel like you’re given an opportunity to really build up your defenses how you’d like them. On that note, you’re also only given a few specific spots to build defenses, limiting your choices even further.

When it comes to the presentation, Defentron uses 3D visuals with a simple neon aesthetic. It works, but isn’t especially memorable. The same goes for this game’s soundtrack, which uses energetic synthesized music that is similarly forgettable.

All of this comes together in a package that’s priced at $10, twice what I’d estimate it’s worth. This when the Nintendo Switch has plenty of solid Tower Defense games at reasonable prices. For example, the excellent Pixeljunk Monsters 2 is $15, only $5 more than this game.

With its overly high price and lacking anything truly exceptional or original, Defentron is a Tower Defense game that’s hard to recommend. Perhaps fans of the genre may enjoy this if they can get it on sale for cheap, but for the most part I recommend players simply stick with better alternatives within the genre.

tl;dr – Defentron is a Tower Defense game that’s painfully generic. It’s not bad, but it does nothing especially well or out of the norm for the genre. And with a $10 price tag, you’re better off spending just a little bit more to get a great game in the genre, rather than wasting your money on a mediocre game like this.
