Review:
Knight’s Retreat, released on PC in 2020 and ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2021, is a Puzzle game that takes the basic rules of the classic Board Game, Chess, and uses them to challenge players to move knight pieces from a starting point to an exit.
The presentation in this game is okay, but fairly minimalist, using extremely low-poly 3D visuals depicting various natural environments on floating islands. This is backed by nice, placid, relaxing music that fits the game pretty well.
As for the gameplay, this is a pretty standard Puzzle game formula that Knight’s Retreat doesn’t do much to alter. The only noteworthy difference here from countless other games of its kind is that players are not allowed to re-use spaces on the board once their knight has moved through them, and players have multiple other pieces to move as well, with the goal being shuffling them out of the way of your knights. Both the gamepad and touchscreen controls work well here… there’s really not much more to say about this game.
At $4 for 80 Puzzles, Knight’s Retreat is a decent option for players wanting a Chess-themed Puzzle game. This game is in no way spectacular, but it’s all-around decent, and fans of Chess and Puzzle games may want to give it a look.
tl;dr – Knight’s Retreat is a Puzzle game using Chess rules where players must move knight pieces to an exit. The visuals are unimpressive, and this game doesn’t do anything especially noteworthy, but it’s a decent game for those who enjoy Chess-themed Puzzle games.
