Review:

Super Snake Block is an Arcade-style game released on Nintendo Switch in 2022, and to its credit, despite being a simple Arcade-style game with “Snake” in the title, this game is not just a direct take on the classic game Snake that dates all the way back to 1976 and was popularized on Nokia mobile phones. However, while Super Snake Block does not play like Snake, it does lift some elements from that classic game.

The way Super Snake Block plays is probably closest to over-the-shoulder Auto-Runner games like Temple Run, where you’re following behind your snake as it navigates through an endless corridor filled with pickups, blocks, and obstacles. Players guide their snake through these levels, trying to avoid obstacles and collect pickups, some of which will lengthen your snake’s tail (much like in the game Snake).

This tail is simultaneously your life bar and your power level – the larger your snake is, the more damage they can take, and the more they can plow through blocks that are in their way. Unfortunately, the number indicating your own strength, as well as numbers indicating the blocks’ toughness, are unfortunately difficult to see. Even worse, the controls for your snake in this game are not great, with your snake taking forever to turn, making it feel like you don’t have much control over the thing.

The presentation for all of this uses 3D “voxel”-style graphics (sorta’ like Minecraft) backed by a “wacky” synthesized soundtrack that works well enough for the game but isn’t memorable. It’s not bad, but there’s nothing here that really stands out.

In the end, I do give Super Snake Block credit for trying something a little different with its inspiration, and with a bit of tweaking, I could see this game being a fun time-waster. Unfortunately, the poor controls keep this from being a game you’re likely to play for very long.

tl;dr – Super Snake Block is an Arcade-style game that plays a bit like an over-the-shoulder Auto-Runner game, while incorporating a few elements of the classic Snake game, all with a voxel-style presentation. There are some good ideas here, but the poor controls keep this from being anything you’re likely to be playing for very long before moving on.
