Nintendo just released three games on their Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo app. Let’s have a look at them!
Here’s what I thought of each:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazing Hebereke | Arcade | 1-2 Competitive (Local / Online) | C+ |
tl;drThis previously Japan-only game is an arena based game that seems a bit like a cross between an Arcade Brawler and a Fighting game. It’s surprisingly deep given its cartoony nature, and it’s just a shame that this is undermined by the untranslated Japanese and the lack of the original game’s 4-player support. Still, it’s worth a look. | |||
| Super R-Type | Shmup | 1 | C |
tl;drA modified port of R-Type II, Super R-Type shares the issue of much of the series, having a nasty difficulty, but this is largely mitigated by the rewind function… and also the abundance of nasty slowdown this game suffers from, which actually manages to go from “helpful” to “annoying” pretty quickly. It’s still an enjoyable Shmup, but it’s a highly flawed one. | |||
| Wrecking Crew ’98 | Compilation / Puzzle-Platformer / Match-3 Puzzle | 1-2 Competitive (Local / Online) | C |
tl;drThis previously Japan-only sequel to the NES launch title (which is also included) plays very differently than the original, with Match-3 Puzzle elements. It’s kinda’ like a more awkward take on Panel de Pon, though nowhere near as accessible or fun. This is an interesting curiosity, but both Panel de Pon and Wario’s Woods offer better experiences than this, depending on what you’re looking for. | |||
What an unusual trio of games. None of these games is outright bad, but all of them are flawed in some way.
Super R-Type is probably the most straightforward of these, a solid Shmup with a difficulty level that’s actually improved in this release, but unfortunately the terrible slowdown is still very present here, and it really hurts this release.
Wrecking Crew ’98 is a surprisingly obscure Mario spin-off game that is the first time this game has been brought to the US officially, and it’s an interesting and wildly different take on the franchise than the original. And while, again, it’s not bad, the odd mix of Platforming and Puzzle elements here doesn’t seem anywhere near as compelling as other Puzzle games already on Nintendo Switch Online’s retro apps.
Of all three of these games, perhaps the one I enjoyed the most, surprisingly, is the oddball Amazing Hebereke game, another previously Japan-only game that’s sorta’ like an arena-based multiplayer-focused Arcade Brawler. I really wish this one got a proper localization with full 4-player support, because if it had this could have been something really special. As-is, it’s a fun and interesting diversion.
Overall, an odd but okay trio of games, worth checking out, even if there’s nothing truly great here.
tl;dr – The SNES, and app gets three games this month, including two that were previously only released in Japan. All are decent but flawed – nothing especially noteworthy, but welcome additions all the same.
