Review:

War of Ships is a multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game released on Nintendo Switch in 2022. In this game, players pilot sailing ships in combat in an enclosed section of sea with a few islands, trying to become the sole survivor.

The presentation here uses simple 3D visuals from an overhead perspective. There is no music here, only ocean sounds and the canon fire of the fighting ships. In short, don’t expect anything even remotely impressive here.

As for the gameplay, there’s just not much to it. Move around, shoot at other ships, and try not to get shot yourself. You can grab pickups, which can bestow temporary power-ups, and there’s a shrinking red ring players must stay within (battle royale-style), but mostly the gameplay here feels pretty shallow. You don’t even have the ability to aim your shots, and ultimately the best strategy here seems to be darting in close to get off a shot you can’t miss before running away as your shooting ability reloads. Outside of battle, you have little in the way of options, save for being able to use in-game currency to buy and upgrade new ships, but none of this greatly changes the issues with the core gameplay.

While there’s nothing terribly wrong with War of Ships, this game is too shallow to hold anyone’s interest for very long. There needs to be at least some skill or strategy to even the most simple of Arcade games, and War of Ships just doesn’t seem to have either.

tl;dr – War of Ships is a multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game where players engage in combat with ships in an enclosed battle royale-style arena. The inability to aim your shots and the overall shallow gameplay makes this a game you’ll get bored with quickly. It’s not a total shipwreck, but there’s little here worth salvaging.
