Review:
Link the Cubes is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game released in 2022 on PC and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2023. This game has players moving a cube through various mazelike levels to get to an exit. The trick here is that some levels contain additional cubes you need to get to their own exits, and you do so by connecting them to move the same way you do.
The presentation here is good but nothing incredible, making use of simple 3D backed by a relaxed acoustic guitar music. Possibly the most noteworthy part of the presentation here is the sound, which makes nice little bubbly noises with each of your movements. All in all, this gives the game a nice, approachable presentation, even if it’s not technically impressive.
The gameplay itself is well-done, with some good puzzle design that makes creative use of the core concept, although it oddly opts not to use that concept a surprisingly large portion of the game, resulting in fairly straightforward puzzles. Even when the concept is used, there’s nothing here that’s truly revolutionary – this is a good Puzzle game, but there’s nothing to revolutionize the genre here.
However, for a mere $5, what’s here is good, and I can say that if you’re looking for a simple Puzzle game that still has good design and won’t break the bank, you’ll probably get your money’s worth out of link the Cubes. This isn’t a truly great entry in the genre, but it’s an enjoyable one all the same.
tl;dr – Link the Cubes is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players move cubes through a maze to an exit, linking and unlinking them to move them where you want. It’s a decent premise and there’s some good puzzle design here, though there’s nothing truly impressive in this game. However, for only $5, this is a nice relaxed game that Puzzle fans may want to try if they’re looking for an inexpensive time-waster.
