Review:

Overdelivery is an Isometric Driving game originally released in 2023 on PC and PlayStation 4 in 2023 (though apparently no long available on PlayStation 4), and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2024. As the title indicates, this game will have players focusing on delivering various items in the game’s open-ended city.

The presentation here is quite nice, with the game’s 3D visuals giving a soft, stylized look with some nice lighting that almost gives the impression of a simplified scale model. This is backed by a really chill low-fi soundtrack that combines with the visuals to give this game a nice, relaxed vibe that’s really great… and then the game goes and messes this up by having an overly upbeat voice say “hurry up” whenever you’re almost out of time on a task.

Unlike the rush of the vaguely similar game Crazy Taxi, Overdelivery lets players take whatever time they need between jobs, only needing to speed back and forth between a worksite and delivery locations after you’ve taken a job, with players accepting work by riding into a red circle and then delivering to green circles as they appear on your map. Alternately, players can opt to head to a car shop (blue circle) to either upgrade their vehicle or buy a new one.

This would all work pretty well, except your starting vehicle is an absolute junker, and even the next few steps above it have their issues. Even just starting up your vehicle seems like a chore, and it chugs along at a glacial pace. Also, at times, the game just randomly decides to have you getting stuck on scenery, needing to fight with the controls to free yourself.

As if the terrible vehicles wasn’t enough, the traffic in this game is absolutely moronic, frequently getting piled up in absurd traffic jams in intersections. And the way sidewalks are dotted with street lamps you can collide with often means that finding a path through the chaos is tricky… and of course while you slow down to try to navigate the mess, you’ll have a difficult time speeding back up again due to the terrible vehicles.

I’m really frustrated that such a good concept with a wonderful presentation is undone by absolutely terrible controls and sluggish vehicles. If Overdelivery spent a little more time in testing and development to smooth out these edges, it could have made for a wonderful relaxed Isometric Driving game. As-is, I simply cannot recommend it.

tl;dr – Overdelivery is an Isometric Driving game where players race to deliver things in an open-ended city. This game has a great relaxed presentation, and the core concept is sound, but the terrible controls and uncooperative vehicles, as well as absolutely ridiculous traffic pile-ups, make this far too much of an ordeal to enjoy its good qualities.

Grade: D+
