Review:
(Note: This game is included in WRC Collection (8, 9, & 10), along with WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship and WRC 9 The Official Game.)
WRC 10, as with prior games in the series, is a Rally Racing game, with this game released in 2021 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2022. In this game, players manage their team and calendar to build up experience and credentials, as well as racing in various events.
I should note that this game is extremely similar to the previous two games in the series, and so I am copying my review of WRC 9 and changing it where appropriate.
Where previous WRC games on Nintendo Switch were a notable downgrade from other platforms, WRC 10 is an outright disaster. Poor framerates and resolution are just the start of it. Ugly textures, horrendous pop-in, nasty aliasing and flickering, and yet despite this poor presentation this is probably the worst load times the series has had on Nintendo Switch. I can’t even compliment the sound this time around, as it simply doesn’t seem as noteworthy this time as it did in prior titles.
When it comes to the gameplay, know that WRC is first and foremost a Simulation-style game, which means that players will want to be extremely precise in their steering, gas, and braking. Again, here the Nintendo Switch version disappoints somewhat due to its lack of analog triggers, and somehow this game’s controls seem worse than the prior game. It’s a shame too, because there are still some nice features here, such as an RPG-style upgrade tree and some good options for customizing your difficulty level.
When it comes to changes from the previous game, honestly I’m going to have to say that I didn’t notice much. The interface is the same, many of the courses are the same, and apart from a few changes to that course lineup, I think a player could find it difficult to determine which game they were playing if it wasn’t for the terrible graphics making it obvious.
In the end, WRC 10 is an absolute mess of a game that not only fails to fix the problems of the prior game, but somehow makes everything worse. This is a game that would be a disgrace 15 years ago on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. If you must play a WRC game on Nintendo Switch (and I highly recommend you play on another platform instead), get WRC 9 or WRC Generations instead.
tl;dr – WRC 10, like its predecessors, is a Rally Racing Simulation-style game where players manage their crew and schedule and race in various conditions. The core game here is a solid but highly challenging entry in the genre, but it has clearly suffered massive downgrades in its transition to the Nintendo Switch, and seems even worse off than the prior game in the series, with little to nothing in the way of improvements. Skip this one.
