Review:
Ninja Shadow Quest is an Action-Platformer released on Nintendo Switch in 2024 where players take the role of a ninja warrior fighting monsters that invaded a peaceful village.
As the title indicates, this game’s visual style is done with everything in silhouette, a choice that for other games may be stylistic but here just feels lazy. There was no attempt here to make the 2D characters’ animations good, the character designs expressive, or even to ensure that they contrasted well with the backgrounds. Similarly, the soundtrack is terrible, with menu music that sounds like it was pulled from some public domain library and in-game music consisting of out-of-theme precussion-focused music that loops in repeat every few seconds. It’s pretty awful.
Sadly, the gameplay does not save this mess of a game. The platforming is passable at best and the combat is absolutely dreadful, with poor hit detection as well. What’s more, this game adds in half-baked concepts like a stealth button where you can’t do anything while hiding and a dash move that needs to recharge for an undisclosed amount of time before it can be used again, despite needing it to pass parts of levels. oh, and don’t get me started on the poorly-written story and dialogue (“Monsters are comming. Look like you are the ninja?”).
Even at its budget price of $5, Ninja Shadow Quest doesn’t seem worth the price. Heck, I spent $2 to get it on sale and I feel like I was taken advantage of. Don’t buy this game.
tl;dr – Ninja Shadow Quest is an Action-Platformer where players play as a ninja fighting against monsters. The presentation is boring, the platforming is mediocre, and the combat is terrible. Don’t buy this game.
