Yum Yum Line is a family-friendly Puzzle game released in 2020 on Nintendo Switch. In this game, players select squares to be moved to a new position, aiming to create a row or column of at least 5 of the same color to clear them, with each turn adding additional squares onto the game board. Players keep going until the game board gets so clogged they cannot continue.

The presentation here is simple but good, using colorful 2D visuals for the board and the squares, with an odd cartoony character in the upper-left corner (I guess he’s supposed to resemble that Om Nom character?). The gameplay is backed by a pretty catchy guitar theme that makes for a great chill tone for the game.

As for the gameplay itself, the gameplay of Yum Yum Line works, but it lacks nuance or any deeper strategy. It seems like the main idea is to try to keep the way clear so you have a pathway to each part of the board so you’re not limited in how you move pieces, and to prioritize pieces that aren’t already near others of the same color. Beyond that, it very much feels like you’re at the mercy of the random placement of squares added with each move you make, and frustratingly their number will quickly outpace what you can clear.

In the end, I suppose Yum Yum Line is an okay time-waster, but the lack of any sort of depth or strategy means it’ll never be more than that. And as time-wasters go, this game’s $8 price tag makes it hard to justify, as there are better time-wasters on Nintendo Switch that aren’t nearly as expensive. However, I suppose this may be worthwhile if you get it on one of those regular $2 sales it’s in.

tl;dr – Yum Yum Line is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players move colored tiles to try to make rows or columns of at least 5, trying to clear as many as they can before the game board gets clogged up. It’s an okay time-waster, but it’s too shallow and random to be anything more than that, and it’s overpriced too. It’s not horrible, but Nintendo Switch owners have numerous better options.

Grade: C
