Review:
Murtop, released in 2023 on PC and Nintendo Switch, is an Arcade-style game that proudly proclaims itself to be a cross between Dig Dug and Bomberman, and I really wish it didn’t, because there’s not much more I could add beyond that to describe this game. This is a game that basically plays like Dig Dug if the main character used Bomberman-style bombs instead of an inflatable pump.
In this game, players control Murti, a bunny who poops bombs as his main method of attacking enemies. These bombs explode in a pattern that extends vertically and horizontally, much as Bomberman’s bombs do, and just as in that game a part of staying alive here is being careful to get out of the way of explosions before they go off, as you can absolutely harm yourself if you’re not careful.
This is one of my bigger complaints about this game, because bombs in this game are on a very short timer, meaning players don’t have much time to escape their blast. As much as I end up killing myself in Bomberman games, I feel like I must have killed myself twice as often playing Murtop.
Given this game’s old-school inspiration, it makes sense that Murtop’s presentation makes use of 2D pixel art visuals that are aesthetically designed in a way that’s similar to Dig Dug, but which has a lot more detailed. This is all backed by a decent but unspectacular chiptune soundtrack that works well for the game’s retro style.
I liked Murtop, but I didn’t love it. I felt like even more than either of its direct inspirations, this game was really unforgiving in its mechanics. However, despite this, it’s still a charming game that does a good job combining two classic Arcade-style games, and fans of either property will find this to be a fun spin on those classics.
tl;dr – Murtop is an Arcade-style game where players take the role of a bomb-pooping bunny, with gameplay that plays like a cross between Dig Dug and Bomberman. The game mechanics here seem a little too unforgiving, but otherwise this is a decent retro-style game that does a good job meshing together its two sources of inspiration.
