Review:
You Adorable! Elfin Clay 2, from here on referred to simply as Elfin Clay 2, is a free-to-play 3v3 team-based Party Game released on Nintendo Switch in 2024. In this game, players play as clay figurines trying to fill their team’s square platform with more objects than the enemy team before time runs out.
It’s not initially clear that this even is what the game is about. The game’s lobby is basically your own little room, and you can visit other players’ rooms, and the game does a poor job of indicating that the actual gameplay is tied to one specific object within that room. Failing to notice this, players could easily believe that the room itself is the game, as it seems like a poor attempt at a “Life Sim”, with decorations to place in the environment and outfits to wear (well, hats). Thankfully, this is not the case.
Not so thankfully, the actual gameplay itself is pretty terrible. Your control over your character is lousy even before you factor in the online lag that I had in half my matches. Trying to make even the smallest jump is a chore, and trying to grab onto an object, the main gameplay mechanic of this game, is a crapshoot. Even if the controls weren’t an issue, the gameplay is annoyingly chaotic, with players not only grabbing items out of the environment to toss onto their panel, but grabbing them off the opponent’s panel as well, or perhaps grabbing onto a large object to swing and knock objects off their panel. And with both teams actively working to sabotage each other, this just becomes a huge mess.
The presentation here features cutesy, colorful characters and environments backed by similarly cutesy music, clearly aiming to attract younger players. On that note, while this game does have microtransactions, I think they’re not as blatant and omnipresent as microtransactions in many other free-to-play games.
However, after all of this I still come back to the fact that Elfin Clay 2 is a game that controls too poorly and plays too chaotically to enjoy. Even for the price of “free”, I don’t think this game is worth getting.
tl;dr – Elfin Clay 2 is a free-to-play 3v3 team-based Party Game where players are clay figurines trying to fill their team’s platform with more objects than the enemy team before time runs out. Unfortunately the controls here are terrible and the gameplay is far too chaotic for this game to be worth playing, even for free. Skip it.
