Octopath Traveler + Octopath Traveler II Bundle, released on Nintendo Switch in 2024, is a Compilation containing a the two named games.
I have separately reviewed these games. Here is what I thought of both of the games in this collection:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octopath Traveler | Turn-Based JRPG | 1 | A |
tl;drOctopath Traveler is a JRPG that mixes old-school game design with refreshing new elements to make for something truly unique and distinctive. While it could have done more with its “eight stories” concept, what’s here is nevertheless an excellent game that fans of the genre should absolutely play. | |||
| Octopath Traveler II | Turn-Based JRPG | 1 | A |
tl;drOctopath Traveler II is a Turn-Based JRPG that follows a new cast of eight characters who each have their own (sadly mostly separate) stories. There are multiple gameplay improvements here, and while there are certainly some rough edges and flaws, overall this is still a must-play game for fans of the genre. | |||
Quite simply, both of these games are magnificent JRPGs with a beautiful art style, wonderful soundtrack, and outstanding characters, with a delightful combat mechanic and compelling progression. Probably the biggest flaw of these games, and one that Octopath Traveler II only just barely improves upon, is that the games’ eight central characters have virtually nothing to do with each other, do little to interact, and have pretty much no reason to join each other beyond the fact that they are the games’ protagonists.
However, even with this complaint, these are must-play JRPGs on Nintendo Switch, and Octopath Traveler II was even nominated for multiple awards in the eShopperReviews 2023 Game Awards, including Best RPG. The first game surely would have been honored with nominations and probably awards too, if I had played it in the year it released. Suffice it to say, I cannot say enough good things about these two games.
With that being the case, the only question remaining is one of value, and here this bundle truly shines. Separately, each of these games retails for $60, while the bundle sells for a mere $75, saving $45 off the price of buying both games. This bundle has not yet gone on sale, while the individual games have both dropped as low as $30 on occasion, so you’ll definitely want to have a look at sale prices before buying, but apart from that this is an incredible value.
Separately, Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are absolute must-play JRPGs on Nintendo Switch. Together in this bundle, with a truly fantastic price tag, they are arguably even better. If you’re a fan of JRPGs with a Nintendo Switch and have not yet picked up either of the Octopath Traveler games, this bundle should be considered an essential buy.
tl;dr – Octopath Traveler + Octopath Traveler II Bundle is a Compilation containing the two named games, both absolutely must-play Turn-Based JRPGs, and with the great value this bundle presents, it’s an even bigger no-brainer than either game on its own. If you enjoy JRPGs on Nintendo Switch and have yet to play the Octopath Traveler games, you should absolutely get this bundle.
