Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack August 2024 Release for Game Boy Advance – Overview

Nintendo just released one more game on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Game Boy Advance app. Let’s have a look!

tl;drOriginally released as a pair with Blue Rescue Team, the two games mark the first entries in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, which combines mechanics of both the Pokemon franchise and the Mystery Dungeon franchise. However, the Pokemon side of things gets the short end of the stick here, as this game isn’t nearly as deep or compelling as mainline Pokemon titles. Still, it’s a fun change of pace that fans of the series should enjoy.

It’s a bit odd that Nintendo would release Red Rescue Team onto the Game Boy Advance app, but not Blue Rescue Team. Some may recall, this pair of games actually received a much improved remake on Nintendo Switch, and the more observant among you may have noticed that I gave the original release above a better grade. Is this because I think this version is better? Heck no! It’s because this version isn’t priced at $60.

In other words, if you already have the remake, there’s nothing for you here except perhaps a bit of nostalgia for what the original game was like. However, if you haven’t gotten the remake, this should give you a decent preview of what the gameplay is like so you can decide if you want the remake.

And what is the gameplay like? Well, take three helpings of the Mystery Dungeon series of Dungeon Crawler games, add one helping of the mainline Pokemon games, and top it off with a very Pokemon-esque presentation and a silly throwaway story about a human who finds themselves transformed into a Pokemon.

This is to say, this game unfortunately shares the Mystery Dungeon franchise’s randomized level design and its knack for being really tedious and repetitive, and waters down the compelling game mechanics of Pokemon quite a bit, making for a game that just doesn’t hold up to the mainline Pokemon franchise, but fans of that franchise may find the different sort of gameplay offered here refreshing.

All in all, not a great addition to the Game Boy Advance app this month, but some players may find it charming enough to be worth their time.

tl;dr – The Game Boy Advance app gets only one game this month – Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, a game that we’ve already received a modernized remake of on Nintendo Switch. However, this version won’t cost you $60 if you’re already subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, though it still has all the same problems of a game that dilutes the great Pokemon gameplay with mediocre Mystery Dungeon gameplay. Some players may still find it to their liking, though.
