Review:
Dadish 3D is a 3D Platformer released in 2024 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. As you would expect with a title like that, this is a game that aims to bring the sort of gameplay we saw in the Dadish series of Platformers to the realm of 3D, and I would argue that it does so fairly successfully, keeping intact the sort of presentation style and gameplay we saw in other games in the series, just… now in 3D.
Speaking of that presentation style, Dadish 3D trades in the pixel art visuals of the earlier games for a simple polygonal 3D look reminiscent of early Nintendo 64 and PlayStation games, while largely keeping intact the colorful world, cute character designs, and adorable sense of humor of those games. This is joined by a nice upbeat synthesized soundtrack, with tunes such as Arbareto Thicket, Pinto Peak, Eterna Internet, and the Boss Theme. All in all, this is a pretty ideal translation of Dadish’s visuals to a 3D space.
In terms of gameplay, it’s a pretty good transition, too. The game definitely has more than a few obstacles and enemies that you can now simply walk around to avoid, and this game suffers from a common 3D Platformer issue, the frustrating need to babysit the camera. But on the whole this is a really good translation of the sort of obstacle course-style gameplay of the 2D games into a 3D format.
The only issue? While I don’t think this series loses anything in the trip to 3D, I also don’t think it gains anything from it either. The level design is still fairly straightforward, not especially clever or interesting, and while there are occasional levels that do things a bit different, for the most part this game felt kinda’ samey throughout.
In the end, I think that fans of the Dadish games will be pleased with this 3D sequel, and those who didn’t care for the earlier games likely won’t have their minds changed by this one. It’s exactly what a Dadish game in 3D needed to be, but nothing more than that.
tl;dr – Dadish 3D is a 3D Platformer that does a good job of translating the 2D games’ gameplay into the third dimension, but not doing much more than that. The game looks nice and retro, the gameplay works, but it’s simple and repetitive and while it doesn’t detract from the series’ usual gameplay, it doesn’t seem to add much either.
