Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack October 2024 Release for Nintendo 64 – Overview

Nintendo just released an additional game on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 app. Let’s have a look at it!

Here’s what I thought:

Nintendo 64 App

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
Banjo-Tooie3D Platformer1, 1-4 Competitive Minigames (Local, Online)B
tl;drThe sequel to Banjo-Kazooie still has a lot of what made the original game great, but it doubles down on some not-so-great elements too, with a lot more tedious backtracking, and a camera that’s possibly even worse. There’s still a lot to love here, but this game doesn’t top the original.

The first and as of this writing only sequel to the original Banjo-Kazooie (sorry, Gruntilda’s Revenge and Nuts ‘N’ Bolts are each kinda’ their own thing), Banjo-Tooie seems to throw everything to the wall to see what sticks. Play as Banjo and Kazooie separately, play as Mumbo, play in first-person shooter sections… it’s like they couldn’t decide what direction to go with this sequel so they went every direction. To its credit, it still mostly works, only the problems the first game had once again rear their ugly head here, and are arguably even worse. Between the scatterbrained design, the frustrating backtracking, and the infuriating camera, this game can’t quite reach the heights of the original.

Still, even with its flaws, it’s a must-play for those who enjoyed the original, or those who are craving another classic 3D Platformer.

tl;dr – The Nintendo 64 app gets one more game this month, Banjo-Tooie. It’s not as good as the previous game, but it’s still an enjoyable 3D Platformer that’s definitely worth checking out if you can put up with its flaws and frustrations.
