Nintendo just released two games on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ app. Let’s have a look at them!
Here’s what I thought of each:
Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow Man | Third-Person Shooter | 1 | D |
tl;drShadow Man combines dull, tedious gunplay, simple mindless enemies, uninspired platforming, needlessly confusing twisty level design, clunky controls, ugly visuals awash in browns and grays, an absurd storyline that plays out like a teenager’s idea of what “mature” stories must be like, and goofy voice acting. I suppose it is at least unique in it artistic style, but otherwise there’s absolutely nothing of value here. | |||
| Turok 2: Seeds of Evil | First-Person Shooter | 1 | D |
tl;drI think Turok 2 is a genuinely good old-school First-Person Shooter, but the controls in this version are so terrible they make the game nearly unplayable. Do yourself a favor and play the much-improved remastered port on Nintendo Switch instead. | |||
Both of these games are available elsewhere on Nintendo Switch in remastered ports, and I even previously reviewed the remaster of Turok 2 and found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. However, the version of Turok 2 included in the N64 Mature 17+ app suffers from controls created for the Nintendo 64 controller, which has not only aged poorly, but anyone without that controller will struggle to make heads or tails of it. And as for Shadow Man, it is just overall a dreary, dull, and poorly-made game, and that’s on top of clunky controls.
So at this point, are there any games that could come to the N64 Mature 17+ app that will actually be worth playing and won’t be ruined by outdated controls? Why, yes, actually. Conker’s Bad Fur Day, at the very least, could still make this app worthwhile. For now though, everything on the app is either bad, or wrecked by bad controls.
tl;dr – The N64 Mature 17+ app gets two games, but Turok 2 is ruined by bad controls, and Shadow Man just isn’t very good to begin with. Not a great month for the app, but then I’m not sure this app was ever going to have a great month.
