Just a few days after the previous game in the series, Nintendo has just released the second Donkey Kong Land game on their Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy app. Let’s have a look!
Here’s what I thought of this game:
Game Boy App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donkey Kong Land 2 | Platformer | 1 | B |
tl;drNot only is this derived from the best Donkey Kong Country game, it’s also a much better take on its source material. It still doesn’t hold a candle to Donkey Kong Country 2, but this is a solid game despite its derivative nature. | |||
I previously reviewed this game last year on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, although unlike the original Donkey Kong Land, the Nintendo Switch release doesn’t get a boost from the improved Game Boy Color palette, as it didn’t suffer as much from the compromised color palette as the first game did.
Once again, Donkey Kong Land 2 suffers from being derived from a much better game you can also play if you subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, via the Super Nintendo Entertainment System App, although this time I think the game it’s pulling from is a better game. Even so, I don’t see much reason to waste your time with this inferior game, except perhaps as a curiosity. Or, I guess, if you’ve already played through the entire SNES trilogy and are anxious to play another game that’s sorta’ similar to those.
Now we wait to see if Nintendo does the obvious thing and releases Donkey Kong Land 3 in a few more days, or possibly next week…
tl;dr – The Game Boy app gets another Donkey Kong Land game, which is another worse, alternate take on Donkey Kong Country 2… which you can already play on the Nintendo Switch Online’s Super Nintendo Entertainment System App. And while it’s pulling from a better game, it seems just as pointless to play this when you have such an obvious better option. So… there’s just not much reason to play this game, except as a curiosity.
