Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack November 2024 Releases for Sega Genesis – Overview

After nearly a year and a half collecting dust, Nintendo finally released three additional games on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Sega Genesis app. Let’s have a look!

Here’s what I thought:

Sega Genesis App

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
Toejam & Earl in Panic on FunkatronPlatformer1D
tl;drThe second game in this series plays completely differently than the first one, yet manages to be just as bad. Slow, unresponsive controls make this platformer a pain to play.
VectormanAction-Platformer1C
tl;drVectorman is an average action-platformer hampered by the screen being too close to the action, meaning that if you want to move forward without dying quickly, you have to inch through the game’s levels.
MercsTop-Down Action1C-
tl;drMercs is a Top-Down Action game in the same vein as Commando and Ikari Warriors. It’s mostly pretty typical for games in the genre, but its stiff, clunky controls don’t do it any favors.

Nintendo breaks a year and a half of not supporting the Sega Genesis app… for this? Yes, I know that the Toejam and Earl series and Vectorman are both iconic Genesis franchises, but neither of those games is especially good. And Mercs is both generic and controls poorly.

Come on, Nintendo, Sega is delisting Sega Genesis Classics from the eShop next week, and there are still so many good games in that collection not on the Sega Genesis app yet. Bio-Hazard Battle, Bonanza Bros., Golden Axe III, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Streets of Rage 3 are all solid games that aren’t yet on the Genesis App… so why are you wasting your time with losers like Mercs?

tl;dr – The Sega Genesis App finally receives an update after nearly a year and a half of silence… only for it to get three games that are mediocre at best: Vectorman, Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron, and Mercs. I suppose at least two of these games are from iconic franchises, but that doesn’t mean you should waste your time playing them.
