Nintendo just released two Tetris games on Nintendo Switch Online’s legacy apps – one game on their Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo Entertainment System app and one on their Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy app. Let’s have a look at them!
Here’s what I thought of each:
Nintendo Entertainment System App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tetris | Falling-Block Puzzle | 1 | B- |
tl;drNintendo’s official version of Tetris for NES not only lacks all of the modernizations missing in the monochrome Game Boy game, it also lacks multiplayer and doesn’t have the legendary “Tetris Theme”, Korobeiniki. For these reasons, I strongly believe this is an inferior game, even though it’s still enjoyable to this day. | |||
Game Boy App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tetris DX (Game Boy Color) | Falling-Block Puzzle | 1-2 Competitive (Local Wireless / Online) | C- |
tl;drThe colorized take on Tetris on Game Boy Color is, quite honestly, one of my least-favorite versions of the game. While it adds color and a few extra game modes, what it adds is nothing special, it still lacks numerous important modern features, it has some of the worst music I’ve encountered in a Tetris game, and the controls are clunky and at times unresponsive. Just play the original Game Boy version of the game and stay far away from this. | |||
The Game Boy App launched with the original release of Tetris on Game Boy, and I believe that is still to this day the best of these old-school takes on the Tetris formula. By comparison, both of these games on more-powerful hardware feel lacking, even though they both have color, and Tetris DX has a few extra game modes. However, the lack of multiplayer in the NES game is inexcusable, as are the terrible controls in the Game Boy Color game. And both games are missing the classic Tetris Theme, Korobeiniki.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to be able to compare and contrast versions of this classic game, but after you’re done sating your curiosity, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be going right back to the original monochrome Game Boy Tetris. Or, if you wanna’ get serious about this, load up Tetris Effect: Connected and play the best version of Tetris.
tl;dr – The NES and Game Boy apps get two versions of Tetris this month… but I feel that both are inferior to the version we already had on the Game Boy app. It’s nice to get these other versions, regardless… but neither is the version I’m most likely to actually play on Nintendo Switch Online.
