Review:

Dex & Akane, released in 2024, is a Compilation containing the two named games, both of which are very different and their only thing in common, as far as I can tell, is sharing the same publisher.

I have separately reviewed these games. Here is what I thought of both of the games in this collection:

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
AkaneTop-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade1B+
tl;drAkane is an Arcade-y top-down Action game that has players as a lone woman fighting off the entire Yakuza using only a gun and a sword. It’s a game that channels Kill Bill and John Wick extremely well, with some really fun action. Unfortunately, the game is lacking in variety and progression, but the core gameplay here is phenomenal and well worth playing for fans of Action games.
DexAction-Platformer / RPG1C+
tl;drDex is an Action-Platformer with strong RPG elements set in a cyberpunk world. Be warned that the first few hours of this game are terrible, and even past that this game’s Action-Platformer elements remain pretty bad throughout. However, once the game’s RPG elements open up, this part of the game has some good content to offer, and players with the patience to see it will be rewarded with an interesting world to explore. If you think you can bear with the game’s flaws until it gets better, Dex might be worth a look.

In short, these are two games are not only very different, but I definitely liked one more than the other. Having said that, I do think both of these games compliment each other well – Akane is action-packed and truly a delight to play, but it also lacks depth and variety, two qualities that Dex has in fair abundance.

So then the topic turns to value, and here we have something interesting. Separately, both of these games cost a combined $25, which makes this bundle’s $22 price tag a slight discount. However, when we look at the sale prices, we see that both included games regularly drop to the absolute low-end price of $2, something that would be very hard for a bundle to beat… and yet, this bundle manages that, with its launch price of $3 showing it’s aiming to consistently be a good deal no matter when you get it, but when you’re looking at sale price it’s a great deal, and I would argue well worth getting even if you’re only interested in one of the two games.

So, in the end, while I do think that Akane is the absolute star of the Dex & Akane bundle, I think both games are worth playing, and this bundle manages to be a good deal no matter which way you slice it, and an excellent deal if you wait for sales. If you haven’t gotten either title yet, I suggest you give this package a look!

tl;dr – Dex & Akane is a Compilation containing the two named games, both very different yet still complimentary. Akane is the clear winner in this package, but the sale price is so good I would argue this bundle is worth picking up even if you’re only interested in one of the games. Keep an eye out for this one to go on sale!
