Nintendo Switch Online January 2025 Releases for Super Nintendo – Overview

Nintendo just released three games on their Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo app. Let’s have a look at them!

Here’s what I thought of each:

Super Nintendo Entertainment System App

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
Fatal Fury 2Fighting Game1-2 Competitive (Local / Online)D
tl;drFatal Fury 2 is a Fighting Game that improves greatly on the first game in the series, but is still well behind modern standards for the genre. Its stiff controls and extremely limited roster of fighters just can’t compare with more modern entries in the genre, or even other contemporaries like Street Fighter II: Champion Edition.
Super Ninja BoyAction-RPG1-2 Co-Op (Local / Online)C-
tl;drThis sequel to the NES game Little Ninja Brothers is an interesting blend of RPG structure with Action-RPG combat, and it has a really catchy soundtrack. Unfortunately the actual combat is extremely limited, hit detection is exceptionally poor, the visuals are primitive and dated, and the localization is severely lacking. The result is a game that certainly has its charms, but mostly isn’t worth playing today.
Sutte HakkunPuzzle-Platformer1D+
tl;drThis Puzzle-Platformer about grabbing and placing blocks to reach multiple gems in a level has some interesting mechanics, but the lack of an English localization means it’s hard to know what you’re doing, and there’s little here that’s actually compelling.

This is a bit of an odd assortment of games, and while there’s some merit to all of these, I don’t think any of them are very good.

Fatal Fury 2 may be from a well-known series, but I do not think this game has aged well, as I noted in my earlier review of the ACA NEOGEO release of the game. I really wanted to like Super Ninja Boy but it just has too many issues to recommend. And Sutte Hakkun, while certainly an interesting addition to the game library, sadly isn’t a very good one after you get past the novelty of it never previously releasing in the West.

All in all, I don’t think this is an especially good month for the app.

tl;dr – The SNES app gets three games this month: Fatal Fury 2, Super Ninja Boy, and Sutte Hakkun. I don’t think any of these are especially good, with all of them seeming dated and having other various issues. Not a great month for the app, I’m sorry to say.
