Gundam Breaker 4 is an Action-RPG released in 2024 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. This game is set within a computerized simulation that acts as a fictional world’s VR game and social hub, set in a world that is extremely enthusiastic about the Gundam franchise and has designed this simulation to let players enjoy this franchise and mix-and-match their favorite Gundam parts.

It’s a flimsy setup for story within a game that’s basically trying to do the same thing, giving Gundam fans a way to meet other Gundam fans, customize their own Gundam mechs, and go on missions together. There are in-game characters and an in-game plot, but this hardly seems noteworthy.

The presentation here is pretty good, with the Gundam mechs depicted in loving detail and highly customizable, with players not only able to mix-and match limbs, bodies, heads, backpacks, legs, and each of the multiple weapons these mechs carries, but also able to individually customize their colors and styles too. The areas you’ll be fighting in look pretty good too, though they’re far from spectacular, and they’re generally pretty small. These visuals are joined by decent enough English voice acting for the characters and a soundtrack that kinda’ takes a back seat to all the action noises while you’re playing.

While I’m impressed by the customizability this game offers, I have to admit that I felt the gameplay was severely underwhelming. Apart from more challenging enemies, this game seems to be extremely button-mashy, and the way the game relegates both jump and dash to the same button makes it far too easy to do one when you meant to do the other. What’s more, the smaller area size I mentioned above can mess up the gameplay as well, as you can dodge out of the way of a major attack, only to slam face-first into an invisible wall and take the full brunt of an attack you thought you would be able to dodge.

Despite the shallow, flawed gameplay, I still feel like Gundam fans will probably enjoy Gundam Breaker 4, even despite the shallow gameplay, small areas, and other frustrations I named above – Simply being able to custom-create your own mech like this is sure to be of value to some folks out there. But if you’re not a diehard Gundam fan and you’re actually looking for a solid game to play, I think you’re better off looking elsewhere.

tl;dr – Gundam Breaker 4 is an Action-RPG where players have a ton of great customization options for their Gundam mechs, but the shallow gameplay, small battle areas, and other gameplay issues make this a game only for diehard fans of the franchise.

Grade: C
