Review:
Football Frenzy is a Football game released in 1992 in arcades and on the NEOGEO home console, with a NEOGEO CD version releasing in 1994 as a launch title for that platform. This is curiously the only Football game to release on the NEOGEO. This modern release sees the game coming to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2018, with a port to PlayStation 4 in 2019.
I think there’s a lot to like about this Football game, but it suffers from two problems that drown out everything else. First, being an Arcade release, everything in this game feels rushed, and in particular when you’re trying to select your play it can feel hectic to make a selection with the clock ticking down. The second problem here is hit detection – numerous times I didn’t catch a pass or tackle an opposing player that I could swear I should have connected with due to poor hit detection.
This release of the game includes a new “Hi-Score Mode” that challenges players to score as much as they can in one run before seeing a game over screen. There is also a new “Caravan Mode” that does much the same, but with the limit being five minutes. In addition, this release of the game includes both English and Japanese versions, and gives players a decent array of options, including various display options, sound options, challenge modifiers, button mapping, and online leaderboards.
With the rushed gameplay and poor hit detection, I can’t recommend Football Frenzy, even on the Nintendo Switch, a console known for its lack of strong Football releases. However, there are still better alternatives like Football Heroes Turbo for those craving a version of the sport on Nintendo Switch. I suggest you check that out instead.
tl;dr – Football Frenzy is a Football game that suffers from a rushed pacing and poor hit detection. Even on Nintendo Switch, you have better options than this.
