Review:

Daggerhood is a challenging Platformer released in 2019 on iOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This game puts players in the role of the titular Daggerhood, a thief who has been caught and sentenced to live out the rest of his days in a deep chasm. However, Daggerhood has a trick up his sleeve, a dagger he can throw and then instantly teleport himself to. Using this, he aims to escape the cave and have his vengeance by robbing the king of his gold.

The presentation in Daggerhood is mostly pretty good, with some nice 2D pixel art visuals with some nice animation. This is backed by a chiptune soundtrack that is far too repetitive, and you’ll likely be muting the game before long in order to escape it. However, apart from this issue, I don’t really have any complaints about the presentation.

When it comes to the gameplay, players can jump and double-jump, wall jump, toss their dagger, and then press the dagger button again to teleport to its position. The game makes full use of this too, with level design that challenges players to string these moves together to avoid hazards, take out enemies, and reach the exit, ideally after collecting five treasures in each room, grabbing a fairy that disappears if left alone too long, and getting to the exit quickly enough to beat the level’s speed targets. While all of these are optional goals, they provide added challenge and make this a great game for speed runners looking to show off their prowess.

Playing Daggerhood well requires good dexterity and timing, and thankfully the controls are pretty good for the most part. I do think the wall jumps and double-jumps in this game are frustratingly short, and I think it would have been much better if the dagger and teleport buttons weren’t one and the same, especially because sometimes you’ll find yourself wanting to do one but accidentally doing the other, especially in a precise sequence of commands when your timing is just a smidge off.

Still, for a $5 Platformer, it’s hard to complain too much. Daggerhood is well worth that low price tag, as it does a great job presenting players with a Platforming challenge with a unique central mechanic and great level design. If you’re a Platformer fan looking to test your skills, this game is a good choice.

tl;dr – Daggerhood is a challenging Platformer where players take the role of the titular thief, who has a dagger he can throw and then teleport himself to. I would have preferred a few tweaks to the controls here, but overall this is an excellent Platformer with a clever central mechanic and great level design, well worth the low $5 price tag.

Grade: B

I always love when platformers play with new ways to move around and navigate the world. This one sounds fun. I’ll have to give it a try.
