Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack April 2025 Releases for Sega Genesis – Overview

Nintendo has released three additional games on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Sega Genesis app. Let’s have a look!

Here’s what I thought:

Sega Genesis App

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
Eswat: City Under SiegeAction-Platformer1C-
tl;drThis is a pretty standard action-platformer, without anything especially noteworthy going for it, and with the downside of the whole “Nintendo hard” thing.
Streets of RageBrawler1-2 Co-Op (Local, Online)C
tl;drStreets of Rage is a decent Brawler, but it doesn’t do anything to really set itself apart or make it particularly noteworthy in any way, and it gets repetitive very quickly.
Super Thunder BladeOn-Rails Shooter1D
tl;drSuper Thunder Blade is a game that has you piloting a helicopter and shooting down enemies in a faux-3D On-Rails Shooter. The framerates are slow, the controls are sluggish and unresponsive… this game is a mess.

In short, not a great trio of games. Probably the best and most recognizable of the three is Streets of Rage, but that game is far, far outclassed by its immediate sequel, which is already on the Sega Genesis app. It’s still enjoyable, there’s just little reason to play it when you could be having a much better time playing Streets of Rage II. The other two games I wouldn’t even bother with.

It’s worth noting that all three games were on Sega’s now-delisted Sega Genesis Classics, and there still remain some actual good games from that collection that we have yet to see hit the Sega Genesis app.

from the eShop next week, and there are still so many good games in that collection not on the Sega Genesis app yet, namely Bio-Hazard Battle, Bonanza Bros., Golden Axe III, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Streets of Rage 3. I would have taken any one of those games over this month’s selections. Oh well, I suppose we can always hope for better luck the next time Nintendo updates the app in… what, half a year, at this rate? Ugh…

tl;dr – The Sega Genesis App gets Eswat: City Under Siege, Streets of Rage, and Super Thunder Blade, and of the trio I’d say Streets of Rage is the only one worth bothering with… and that one simply cannot compare to its sequel, which is already on the app. All in all, not a great month for the Genesis app.
