Review:
Belle Boomerang is a Platformer released on PC in 2022 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2023. In this game, players take the role of the titular boomerang-using Belle, who fights off various creatures as she progresses through various levels to try to save her kingdom. Or something. This game isn’t exactly big on story.
One thing Belle Boomerang absolutely nails is its retro look, which has a nice 2D pixel art style using a limited but changing color palette that’s strongly reminiscent of some of the better classic Nintendo Entertainment System games, with Kirby’s Adventure seeming particularly similar. This is paired with a chiptune soundtrack that’s nothing special but fits the look of the game perfectly.
When it comes to the gameplay, Belle Boomerang is charming and occasionally clever, but not especially compelling. Belle’s standard attack is an extremely short-range boomerang toss, and she can gain power-ups that are usually stage-dependent that give her upgraded abilities, but there’s nothing truly exciting here, and you don’t keep these abilities from one stage to the next. Beyond this, Belle Boomerang is a competent but not especially interesting Platformer.
Fans of retro-style games may want to try out Belle Boomerang, as it does a great job imitating that look and gameplay, but when you look past the presentation there isn’t really anything special going on here. It’s fine, but hardly worth getting excited over.
tl;dr – Belle Boomerang is a retro-style Platformer where players take the role of the titular boomerang-tossing heroine. The presentation here is a delightful take on the Nintendo Entertainment System era, but beyond this nothing else here is particularly noteworthy. It’s fine, but unless the presentation appeals to you, there’s probably not much here for you.
