Review:
Om Nom: Run 2, released in 2024 on Nintendo Switch, is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner starring Om Nom, the cute little green creature from the Cut the Rope series, which dates all the way back to 2010. This game is the sequel to 2020’s Om Nom: Run.
Like its predecessor, Om Nom: Run 2 features a pretty decent presentation, with colorful cartoony 3D visuals with fluid framerates, and a decent amount of variety for this sort of game and some decent animation. This is joined by extremely repetitive whimsical music that you’ll tire of pretty quickly.
For the gameplay, this game ditches the multiplayer and endless modes of the prior game to focus strictly just on a sort of level-based play that has you racing against numerous other computer-controlled opponents in three-round races to try and get first place.
To this game’s credit, it builds on one of the main strengths of the first game, variety, with lots of different obstacles and hazards between you and the goal. What’s more, the controls feel much better this time around, addressing one of the main issues I had with the original om Nom: Run. Plus, this expands what was previously only three lanes into 10 lanes, often with multiple levels above each other. And you’ll be exploring these levels with a variety of abilities, including double-jumps, wall runs, and occasionally a jetpack.
Unfortunately, in removing game modes, players are given less freedom to enjoy this variety the way they want. Even worse, the way this game forces you into three-round races means you’ll have to repeat every course three times, forcing tiresome repetition into the game. And even worse, sometimes the opposing AI players get an inexplicable speed boost, meaning you don’t even feel like this is a fair race you’re competing in.
Because of this enforced repetition and seemingly cheating AI, I feel like despite all the improvements here over the first game, the end result is actually worse. And given that I found the first game to be a fairly average experience in the Auto-Runner genre, that means I really cannot recommend this game. You have plenty of other more satisfying options in the genre.
tl;dr – Om Nom: Run 2 is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner starring the little green creature from the Cut the Rope series. This game adds a lot more variety over the first game, but forces you into three-round races making for required repetition against cheating AI opponents. This largely outweighs all the improvements this game features, and makes this game an overall worse experience.
