Review:

Emoji Music is an Arcade-style game released on Nintendo Switch in 2021. In this game, players guide a colored dot down a path trying to collect other dots of the same color while avoiding the wrong-colored dots and avoiding falling off the path.

Despite the game’s title, emojis and music don’t seem to have anything to do with the actual gameplay. The dots don’t seem to be arranged in a way that has anything to do with the music, and there are barely any emojis in the game at all – each level is apparently represented by one, and that’s about it.

Still, despite the misleading title, I can say that the music in this game is actually pretty good, with catchy pop songs being played in the game’s levels (though unfortunately I don’t have any examples to point to). This joins a fairly simple but colorful 2D presentation that doesn’t exactly look great, but it suffices for the gameplay.

When it comes to that gameplay, Emoji Music is extremely simple. In fact, the gameplay here is basic, plain, and outright boring – move left and right, avoid bad things and touch good things, and that’s it.

It’s frustrating, because there are some genuinely excellent games out there that are saddled with lackluster or forgettable soundtracks, and then you have this game with some really catchy tunes slapped onto some absolutely yawn-inducing gameplay. Because of this, I can’t really recommend Emoji Music. Maybe just listen to a nice music playlist instead.

tl;dr – Emoji Music is an Arcade-style game with a great pop-style soundtrack and simple, boring gameplay. It’s just not worth playing this to get to the great music, when you could just listen to a music app instead.
