Review:
Caveheart is an Action-Platformer with some RPG elements released on Nintendo Switch in 2024. In this game, players take the role of a thief who ventured into a mysterious cave on behalf of a king to retrieve five relics in exchange for his freedom, and once that task was completed in a few minutes he decided he was so intrigued by the cave that he wanted to go back and look around some more.
At least… that seems to be the case. It’s kinda’ hard to tell, since this game’s localization is absolutely awful, and then on top of that all of the game’s text isdeliveredwithbarelyanyspacesandwhentherearespa cesthey’reofteninoddplac eswheretheyshouldn’tbe. It’s absolutely terrible, and it would be one thing if this was just an intro text crawl or something you rarely encounter, but this game is absolutely full of text, and it’s torturously bad every time you have to read it.
However, the presentation might actually be worse. This game’s 2D visuals are shown far too up close to the action, with an extremely pixelated main character and virtually every other character and the backgrounds a blurry mess like the camera lens is smeared in Vaseline. And this is joined by some pretty awful chiptune music that you’ll want to shut off soon after hearing it.
If you thought maybe good gameplay could save this mess, think again. Terrible platforming, terrible combat with poor hit detection and damage sponge enemies, repetitive aimless level design… and that’s when the game works!
Which is to say, it often doesn’t work. At one point, the camera got stuck against the far wall and refused to scroll away from it even as my character left the screen. At another point a boss got stuck on the floor facing away from me, making it easy to just wail away at him until I won. Then I got a key I was told would open every door in the dungeon, only to immediately encounter a door it wouldn’t open.
In short, Caveheart is top-to-bottom terrible, with zero redeeming features. Do not waste your money on this game.
tl;dr – Caveheart is an Action-Platformer about a thief exploring a mysterious dungeon, and every part of this game is terrible, from the horrendously bad localization to the eye-wateringly awful graphics to the broken, abysmal gameplay. Do not waste money on this disaster of a game.
